For the rest of the afternoon, Logan and Olivia got lost in the 1930’s world of Irene Ellis. Before cell phones. Before the internet. And, as a reminder of how lucky they were to live in the twenty-first century, before women had many rights and even less power.

They took turns sharing interesting entries as they found them.

One passage in particular struck Logan as almost unbelievable.

“Listen to this one,” she said to Olivia.

February 12, 1932

I don’t know what to do. Mr. Woodrow won’t budge. I went to see him this morning, to let him know the rest of the payment might be late, but we’d make it. We still want this piece of property, even if it only has one run-down, boarded up building on it. Jacob can fix anything and we’re not afraid of hard work.

That hateful man! Mr. Woodrow just stood there in his doorway, folded his arms and said straight out he’ll only do business with Jacob. Says he has no contract with me. I explained Jacob’s not here and I don’t know what’s happened to him or when he’s coming back. Woodrow said he’d give Jacob until Friday, but if he didn’t show up with the rest of the deposit by then, he would forfeit the rest.

All that money, just gone! I tried to reason with him. I told him that was our money and I would make good on the rest if he just gave me some time. But he said he didn’t do business with women. Period.

And when I tried to stand my ground, he told me my best bet was to find another man if Jacob didn’t come home. Like Jacob had run off or something! I wanted to scream and cry at the same time, but I wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of doing either.

When I told Father, he said Mr. Woodrow is within his rights according to the law. I don’t know what I expected. I think I wanted him to offer to help. He could pay the rest of the deposit and put the property in his name until I could pay him back. But he refused.

Father always thought we were foolish in buying that property. This just seemed to harden his opinion against Jacob further. He said Aaron and I will always have a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs, and food on our plates. As if that was enough to keep someone alive.

I don’t mean to criticize him. Father is a good man. I know he and mother sympathize with our situation, but secretly, I think he is pleased that Jacob is gone and hopes he never returns.

I will live, but only for Aaron. As for me, I will just have to learn to live without dreams.

“Wow,” Olivia said. “Hard to believe men could get away with that crap back then. What was that, about eighty years ago?”

“Eighty-eight,” Logan said. “Not that long ago, when you think about it.”

Logan stirred the fire, adding another log. Olivia got up, stretched and brought back a snack.
